Vaz Dera

 

Vaz Dera is the head coach of CrossFit Crescenta Valley with eight years of experience in the fitness industry under his belt. He started off as a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness, where he learned the skills and tools needed to venture out and start CrossFit Array in Montrose in 2011. With the success of his first location, he was able to open his second box CrossFit Array Kenneth Village in 2013.

How did Vaz get into Crossfit? In 2009, during his employment at 24 Hour Fitness Glendale Super Sport, Vaz was first exposed to CrossFit. This experience instantly changed his perception on fitness and he knew he had found something very valuable in regards to training.

Although Vaz thrives on individual training, the community and the group environment is what drove Coach Vaz to change his methodology of training clients. Vaz wanted a create an environment where members walk into the box and feel as if they are part of a family, and that’s exactly what makes Crossfit Crescenta Valley different than many other gyms in Los Angeles.

Vaz’s motivation stems from his clients where he builds strong relationships with them and assists them in reaching their fitness goals. This is what keeps him going and helps him format his gym. His knowledge with personal training allows him to connect to all athletes in his gym whether they are new to the sport, have had injuries and need modifications, or who have experience in the field already. Vaz is the first North Face Mountain Athletics Coach in Los Angeles and has done group training for North Face.

Chona Navarro


Chona Navarro became a member of CrossFit Crescenta Valley in early 2014 and didn’t think at the time that she would later become a CrossFit Coach.  Like most, she became hooked within the first few classes - hooked on feeling stronger, gaining more energy, and the empowerment of mind and body that results from better health.  


Chona earned her L-1 CrossFit certificate in June 2015 and began coaching in September 2015.  Recently, she became certified as a Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and continues to educate herself on enhancing health and performance through proper nutrition.  
 
Chona has a busy household of five, raising two athletic teenage kids (who are also avid CrossFitters) and their two rescue dogs.  Their favorite family past time is traveling and discovering the best restaurants to satisfy their shared love for sushi, burgers, and ice cream.  While on vacation, they stay active by including adventures such as hiking, water rafting, zip lining - to name a few - and of course, squeezing in a drop-in session at a local CrossFit gym!

Joshua Murillo

Joshua began CrossFit in 2011. He has been involved with sports his entire life. Playing collegiate level baseball, and boxing for 10 years made CrossFit a great outlet for Joshua’s competitive spirit. He specializes in competitive CrossFit training, and has lots of knowledge and experience in this area. On top of coaching CrossFit, Josh is a stunt performer in the film and television industry and just finished up a world tour with the traveling stunt show Marvel Universe Live.

Joshua met his wife, Hayley, early in their CrossFit careers, and they have been married since 2015. His favorite part about coaching is helping people realize their full potential. He loves seeing how happy people become when they surpass their own expectations about what they can accomplish. He loves the “process” and wants to share his passion for self improvement with anyone who is motivated to change their lives for the better.

Hayley Murillo

Hayley is a former Division I Cheerleader with a softball and competitive gymnastics background. Her CrossFit journey started in 2011 and quickly progressed into her achieving her Level 1 certification and coaching.

Along with coaching, Hayley is a competitive CrossFit athlete. In 2013 she competed with Team High Voltage in the SoCal regional. She made her debut as an Individual competitor in the 2014 SoCal regionals and competed again in the 2016 California Super Regional. 

She qualified for The Granite Games and Wodapalooza as an individual athlete in 2016. This year, she earned her best finish yet, and placed 16th in the Super California Regional as an individual. She is currently gearing up for The 2017 Granite Games after qualifying in the top 30. 

She had a successful 5 seasons at Notre Dame High School as the Varsity Cheer Coach. In 2015, Hayley joined Marvel Universe Live and toured all over the U.S., Canada and Europe with Feld Entertainment as a Stuntwoman. She is now doing live shows in Los Angeles as well as performing stunts in the film and TV industry. Her quest to inspire others is never ending.

Rubina Vartanians

Rubina was introduced to CrossFit in 2014 during one of her college classes. For the past three years she has been training at CrossFit Crescenta Valley as she implements CrossFit in her every day life.

 

At the age of three, Rubina enrolled in dance. For twenty one years, she has trained in classical ballet, modern, contemporary, and traditional folk techniques. In 2009, she began to dance professionally and traveled around the United States and internationally to perform in many landmark theaters.

 

Her love for arts inspired her to study human movement as she obtained a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Kinesiology- Exercise Science from California State University, Northridge. Upon graduating she began to explore the realm of fitness as a mechanism to better herself in and out of the gym. She was drawn to the competitive aspects of CrossFit training. Besides the high physiological demands she began to challenge herself mentally with every workout.

 

When she is not at the gym, Rubina spends her time teaching, choreographing, and performing. Her passion lies with helping others in achieving what they once believed was impossible. In the near future, she plans to pursue a career in Physical Therapy.
